Carissimi amici e amiche,
vi scrivo, come ormai da anni, per fare con voi una rapida sintesi dell’anno che sta per chiudersi e per inviare a voi e ai vostri cari gli auguri dell’Associazione e miei per le feste di fine anno.
Il 2011 ha rappresentato per VSP, per il nostro Paese, per l’Europa e per il mondo, un anno di grandi difficoltà, non solo economiche. La situazione politica in Nord Africa (Libia, Tunisia, Egitto) ha creato una serie di emergenze umanitarie che hanno assorbito fondi ed energie dell’ONU.

Technical assistance to identify and design business image will assist small scale producers in each organization in the transition towards an associated identity, with market appropriate product images, that will add value to their products. |

The community is320 kmfrom the Capital City, Guatemala,60 kmfrom the State capital City San Marcos and15 kmfrom the Municipal capital Tacaná. San Pedro is located 25km from theGuatemala/Mexicoborder. The general assembly includes 341 members, 20% women and 80% men. Tomatoes are produced in greenhouses, 14 belong to the cooperative and 18 belong to individual producers. A further 20 greenhouses are currently under construction. The Cooperative also produces 14, 1000m2 (32 cuerdas – Guatemalan land measurement) of “toyocan” potatoes. ASDOGUA: (Literal translation of name: Western Association for Development inGuatemala) ASDOGUA in a not-for-profit organization, founded in 2009. Their main objective is to manage rural development projects in the western región ofGuatemala. The ASDOGUA office is located in thevillageofTojchoc Grande, Aldea El Rosario,TacanáMunicipalityin the State of San Marcos. Tojcho Grande is316 kmfrom the Capital City, Guatemala and66 kmfrom the State Capital. ASDOGUA has 48 cuerdas (Guatemalan land measurement equivalent to 21,168m2), of “toyocan” potatoes sold at local, national and regional markets. Asociación ACADAMIT: (Literal translation of name: Maya Peasant Integral Development Association) ACADAMIT is a not-for-profit apolitical organization founded in 2005 and legally registered in April 2010. Their office is in the village Aldea Villa Real,TajumulcoMunicipality,San MarcosState. The community is 275km from the Capital City, Guatemala, 11 kms from the Municipal capital, and 25kms from the State capital. ACADAMIT produces potatoes that are sold to wholesalers in the cities of Quetzaltenango andSan Marcos. |
Assignment Terms of Reference – Develop business images for each organization which should include as a minimum:
- Logo design (business).
- Develop branding according to current markets.
- Provide technical assistance for each organization in packaging for their respective produce.
- Design appropriate product labels according to current markets.
- Develop product catalogues (where appropriate), a multimedia presentation (where appropriate), presentation/business cards, banners, leaflets, and/or any other material that will assist product merchandising. Merchandising tools should be appropriate for current local markets.
- Design basic protocol (where appropriate) to ensure product image and branding transmit professionalism.
- Assist each organization to obtain tools and/or material to use in product merchandising activities.
- Contribute to documentation of the mission with photos and written summary of their experience, to be published by UNV Volunteer Voices to promote corporate volunteerism.
- Promote and/or advise local groups in the use of OV (online volunteering), and encourage relevant local individuals and groups to use OV whenever technically possible
How the volunteer’s support would contribute to achieving the millennium goals:
Development of product images for each organization seeks to secure product positioning in local, regional and national markets. As a result, the local organizations hope to increase their sales, subsequently increasing income generation, and improving the economic situation of associates and members in rural communities ofGuatemala.
Expected outcome of the advisory mission:
- Each organization is equipped with positive product images, branding, knowledge, materials and tools that enables them to efficiently and effectively position their product in existing markets.
- Increased product sales in at least 1 market within all three organizations 6 months after advisory mission and implementation of merchandising packages.
Work Site: Offices of each organization are located in local communities, an estimated 20 minutes travel by car from the Municipal capital. FAO Guatemala will provide transport in coordination with the local associations to the work site. There is a FAO Regional office in State capital,San Marcos, and volunteers may be based here and travel in FAO transport to the offices of each organization. Subject to UN Security clearance, volunteers may stay in Municipalities closer to the organizations, such as Tacaná or Ixchiguán were there are basic services and hotels available.
Assignment Duration and number of volunteers: 1 month for 1 volunteer.
Language Requirements: Fluent Spanish is essential.
Qualification Requirements:
a) Education: Degree in Marketing, Publicity or Graphic Design.
b) Professional experience:
- Intermediate or advanced knowledge of Photoshop, Freehand or similar software.
- Proven experience in merchandising/branding for agricultural products.
- Previous experience in technical assistance for small scale rural agricultural producers.
c) Commitment to UN values, understanding and commitment to volunteerism.
Living Conditions: A large rural City, San Marcos provides decent living conditions, with access to cellular phone coverage/networks, internet, general supermarkets, local restaurants and three star hotels.

Description of Requesting Organization
Specialization: Service Center for Women Entrepreneurs (CSEM in Spanish), providing entrepreneurial and financial services to micro-entrepreneur women in rural Guatemala.
Product line: The two groups for whom support is requested in specific, produce mushrooms (Visión Maya) and marmalades and jams (Delicias del Campo).
Market description: Most woman entrepreneurs attend local, small-scale markets. The CSEM attends 614 individual clients and approximately 50 businesses.
No. of employees and type of employees: Visión Maya: 25 women; Delicias del Campo: 20 women.; CSEM: 1 Manager, 3 Technicians.
Other information: The Service Centers for Women Entrepreneurs (CSEMs) were established in the framework of the UN Women led MyDEL program to address the unsatisfied demand for entrepreneurial services designed for rural and urban women entrepreneurs. The CSEMs provide technical and financial services to support women’s businesses and contribute to the generation of decent work and income; hence boosting local economies. They also facilitate the application of national and regional level programmes for micro and small enterprises at the local level; and promote the advancement of gender equality within the economy. They are also important actors in channeling local demands and representing women in bodies responsible for decision making on economic matters, among others.
In Guatemala, the CSEMs are established within the Local Economic Development Agencies (ADELs) or similar structures in the departments of Alta Verapaz, Chiquimula, El Quiché, Huehuetenango, San Marcos, Sololá and Totonicapán. The beneficiary organizations for this mission, Delicias del Campo and Visión Maya are members of CSEM Sololá.
1. Assignment Terms of Reference
The departOther information. ment of Sololá, like most parts of ruralGuatemala, suffers from both widespread poverty and environmental degradation, as well as frequent natural disasters. The CSEM of Sololá is located in thevillage of Panajachelby Lake Atitlán, a lake surrounded by volcanoes and villages, inhabited by a largely indigenous population that mainly lives off agricultural production and small-scale tourism. The CSEM has identified a growing demand for information on addressing climate change and environmental degradation and for the involvement in related processes among its clients.
The Volunteer is expected to contribute to answering this need by:
- For 1 week each; provide assistance on designing ecological packaging for the products commercialized by the association Visión Maya (San Andrés Semetaj, Sololá – production of mushrooms) and Delicias del campo (San Antonio Palopó, Sololá – production of jams and marmalades)
- Given resources in terms of time available, advice the group members on adopting environmentally sustainable practices in production and the management of their businesses.
- In coordination with the UNV Specialist in Sustainable Development at UN Women Guatemala, document best practices identified during the mission and contribute to a guide on cost-efficient ways of designing ecological packaging and assuming environmentally sustainable practices for micro businesses.
- Possibly participate in the organization of a training workshop on reducing the environmental burden of microbusinesses, with participation from all the 7 CSEMs of Guatemala (estimated 21 staff).
Expected outcome of the advisory mission:
- The two identified groups have designed ecological packaging for their products
- Increased capacity of the Managers of the CSEMs to advise women entrepreneurs on adopting environmentally sustainable business practices
- Short guide incorporating identified best practices in order to disseminate acquired knowledge among the network of CSEMs inCentral Americaand other regions.
- A short article written by the volunteer on their experience and results of the mission published by UNV, UN Women and/or donor organization highlighting the contribution of corporate volunteerism.
2. Work Site: The CSEM located in Panajachel, Sololá ; with possible shorter missions to neighboring municipalities and villages (especially San Andrés Semetaj and San Antonio Palopó). Panajachel is a popular tourist site in Guatemala, with all amentitie, general services and a wide range of hotel accomodation.
3. Assignment Duration and number of volunteers required: 1 Volunteer for 3 weeks
4. Language Requirements: Fluent Spanish is essential.
5. Qualification Requirements:
- Education: Bachelor´s degree in Environmental Sciences or related field ; Additional studies in business management (preferred). Master´s degree in Environmental Sciences or related field (preferred).
- Professional experience: Minimum 5 years of experience in work related to the field of the assignment.
6. Living Conditions: Panajachel is a tourist site that offers most necessary services, quality hotel lodging, diverse food and dietary options, with Internet access.
Auguri di Buon Compleanno ad un socio veramente importante
Il giorno 16/05/2012 si è celebrato il 90° compleanno di uno dei “Padri Fondatori” della ns. associazione, quello dell’Ing. Edmondo Schmidt di Friedberg di Roma.
Una ricorrenza sicuramente importante per l’interessato, ma ancora più importante per tutti i soci della VSP che lo conoscono e che hanno avuto la possibilità, e l’onore (sia in passato sia recentemente), di apprezzare la sue molte qualità, fra le quali ci piace ricordare: la sua grandissima esperienza professionale, la sua profonda competenza in molti settori, la sua concretezza e propositività e la sua umanità (non disgiunte da un pizzico di sana ironia).
Da tutti quelli, come chi scrive, che si onorano di godere della sua amicizia, le giungano i più sinceri auguri e un caloroso abbraccio, per l’importante traguardo raggiunto … BUON COMPLEANNO CARO EDMONDO … e grazie per tutto quello che hai fatto fino ad oggi, e che siamo certi continuerai a fare anche in futuro, per rendere sempre più grande la creatura che hai contribuito a far nascere, ben ventisei anni fa, ed a far prosperare in tutti questi anni … la nostra amata VSP!
Giovani & Impresa ha concluso il corso di formazione presso l’Istituto Tecnico Industriale “L. Cobianchi” di Verbania
Il corso di formazione “Giovani & Impresa” si è svolto presso l’Istituto Tecnico Industriale “L. Cobianchi” di Verbania durante il periodo dal 1° marzo al 26 aprile 2012, articolato in due moduli: “la vita in azienda” e “il posto di lavoro”. Hanno partecipato gli alunni delle classi quarta e quinta, nell’ambito delle attività finalizzate allo sviluppo di efficaci legami tra la scuola ed il mondo del lavoro.
La Direzione dell’Istituto L. Cobianchi ringrazia Piero Ferretti ed il suo staff per la positiva esperienza, iniziata nel 2011 con VSP Onlus, e auspica di proseguire anche per l’anno prossimo la formazione con il progetto “Giovani & Impresa”.

Representing the main sectors of fashion. The consortium aims to support initiatives for penetration in the domestic and international markets for developing and positioning a registered collective brand Doni ® as brand concept of excellence, with international ambition and of high design. Fulfilling a vital role in society and Mexican economy in providing employment in the State ofJaliscoand in the economic and sectoral growth in the region in general. As such, we represent over 200 direct jobs and 150 more indirect (suppliers, temporary, etc.). By positioning in international markets, they want and need to increase further these figures and improve both their competitiveness and entrepreneurial training by investing in quality, innovation and new advanced technologies for their sectors
General Objective: Increase productivity and quality standards level of 6 Consortium companies in the manufacturing of suits, business uniforms for Ladies and Gentlemen and dresses for ceremonies.
Specific Objectives: Increase employee productivity, raising and ensuring the quality of confection. Implementing actions and controls to facilitate the staff with monitoring tools to achieve improvement of the production process.
Description of the project: Strengthening the Export Consortium of Mexican fashion.
Main activities for the expert during his mission: Requested an expert specialized in textile and confection for men & woman suits, ceremonial dresses and business uniforms, who speaks Spanish as he will be in contact with the plant workers of the companies. Problems faced: – Installed capacity is bigger than used – Productivity of employee is low, turn over is low and absenteeism considerable – industrial waste and costs aren’t fully controlled – Order control is not systematized.
Area in which we ask the experts: – Production and Process Management – quality Management – Measurement of time – industrial cost .
Expected results trough technical assistance: Increase the productivity per employee, time management, development of a team effort to minimize personnel rotation, development of guidelines for the production processes * Implementation of systems for quality control * Improve working environment (safety, environment, rating …) * Management of waste and precise identification of industrial costs.
Country: México
Number of beneficiary companies: 1 expert for 3 companies (textile and confection). Medium companies with updated machinery, settled in the domestic market, with over 30 years experience in their field.

Le motivazioni di un socio che, da anni, condivide la “mission” VSP
Sono Vittorio Baracca,
Le motivazioni personali che mi hanno portato a condividere la “mission” della VSP ed a dare mio contributo professionale nel settore edile, grazie all’esperienza maturata in anni di attività come architetto, sono molteplici, ma riassumibili in una sola:
“La volontà di pormi in gioco, mettendo la mia preparazione ed esperienza di progettista, al servizio di popolazioni bisognose di apporti qualificati”.
E’ mia opinione, infatti, che tali popoli abbiano non solo bisogno di aiuti finanziari, ma, anche e soprattutto, di conoscenze tecniche ed organizzative rivolte ad una generazione di giovani proiettata al futuro.La mia esperienza “sul campo” si è svolta in Albania con due missioni:
- Nella prima mi sono occupato della progettazione di un liceo partendo dalla struttura esistente (una ex prigione) provvisoriamente adibita a scuola e di un edificio destinato al convitto, tenendo in debito conto le esigenze dei ragazzi, il rispetto dell’ambiente, le misure di sicurezza, la funzionalità, l’estetica ed anche il collegamento alle infrastrutture locali esistenti o di futura realizzazione.
- Nella seconda, il mio incarico contemplava la progettazione di un Centro Polifunzionale Sportivo (palazzetto dello sport, stadio per atletica e calcio, basket, palestra, ecc.) destinato all’utenza di un territorio comprendente ben nove comuni, partendo, anche qui, da strutture militari obsolete edificate nel periodo della 2° Guerra Mondiale.
Durante il mio intervento ho anche tenuto in considerazione lo sviluppo di alcuni sport legati alle caratteristiche del luogo, che comprendevano la presenza di fiumi (es. canoa, rafting, ecc.), valutandoli in funzione del loro inserimento nel contesto ambientale e, soprattutto, dei risultati di un precedente referendum popolare.

Queste due esperienze mi hanno sicuramente arricchito culturalmente ma anche umanamente, in quanto ho avuto la possibilità di entrare in contatto con persone molto semplici, ma ricche di umanità e con tanta “voglia di fare” per costruire un nuovo futuro per la loro Patria e per i loro giovani desiderosi di aprirsi al mondo, portandomi a considerare che siamo tutti uguali e che abbiamo bisogno l’uno dell’altro.
La Fondazione Antiusura CRT “La Scialuppa – Onlus”
L’Associazione Volontari Senior Professionali – V.S.P. Onlus – martedì 6 marzo alle ore 11.00, presso il Centro Servizi V.S.S.P., in via Giolitti 21 a Torino, presenta un progetto per la diffusione sul territorio piemontese dell’attività di Volontariato anti usura messa a disposizione dalla Fondazione Anti Usura CRT “La Scialuppa” – Onlus.
L’iniziativa rappresenta un possibile salvataggio per famiglie e piccole imprese in temporanee difficoltà economiche, oltre che un luogo dove chiedere informazioni e consigli. Secondo l’Osservatorio della Regione Piemonte sul fenomeno dell’usura dal 2004 al 2009 le denunce per usura sono passate da 41 a 55 (nella provincia di Torino da 20 a 36), ma le richieste di aiuto giunte alle Fondazioni Anti Usura sono state moltissime. Per esempio la Fondazione Anti Usura CRT “La Scialuppa” è passata da 729 domande del 2008 a ben 1297 nel 2009 – n.1087 nel 2010 e n.1102 nel 2011 e gli interventi di sostegno finanziario sono passati da 116 del 2008 a 150 dell’ultimo anno 2011.
Dal settembre 1998, anno della sua nascita, e fino a fine 2011 “La Scialuppa CRT” – Onlus ha accolto a bordo e dato soccorso a 7407 persone che hanno richiesto un aiuto. Tutte hanno ricevuto adeguata consulenza e assistenza e per 1210 di loro sono stati ristrutturati i debiti con riscadenzamento degli stessi a condizioni di tasso più favorevoli, attivando un totale di finanziamenti per un importo di 18.886.098,06 euro (assistiti da garanzia della Fondazione Anti Usura CRT – La scialuppa – per un totale di 13.341.562,63 che operano nel sociale in stretto contatto con il dilagante disagio economico in questo particolare momento di crisi del nostro Paese.
L’Associazione V.S.P. opera da oltre 20 anni nel mondo del Volontariato, prevalentemente mediante missioni professionali in Paesi in via di sviluppo, ed è composta da professionisti, manager, docenti universitari: persone che, dopo una vita in cui hanno esercitato un’attività qualificata, hanno deciso di mettere le proprie conoscenze al servizio di chi con esse può vedere evolvere la propria situazione economica e sociale.
